The authors of this book wish to enrich the debates by helping overcome stereotypes – which often manifest through the use of terms such as “small-scale farming, subsistence farming, peasant, etc.” Research work has emphatically demonstrated the great adaptability of family farming systems and their ability to meet the major challenges of tomorrow but it has also not overlooked their limitations. The authors explore the choices facing society and possible development trajectories at national and international levels, and the contribution that agriculture will have to make. They call for a recommitment of public policies in favor of family farming in developing countries and stress the importance of planning actions targeted at and tailored to the family character of agricultural models. But, above all, they highlight the need to overcome strictly sectoral rationales, by placing family farming at the core of a broader economic and social project. This book is the result of a collaborative effort led by CIRAD and encapsulates three decades of research on family farming. It will interest researchers, teachers and students, and all those involved in national and international efforts for the development of countries in the South.

About the Author
Coordinating editor of this book, is a socio-economist at CIRAD. Since 2010, he is responsible for the program "Trajectories, differentiations and inequalities in rural societies" of the French research unit ART-Dev. He is currently working on family farming systems, to renew the analytical frameworks of their strategies and performance. As CIRAD’s focal point for the International Year of Family Farming, he recently published several books and articles on the topic and is invited to many international conferences on family farming all over the world.

British equivalent to Wimpy Kid

Much like the "Wimpy Kid" books, this series is very similar except written at a bit of an easier level; it has much more drawing and graphically appealing that in some ways it could be called a graphic novel, though don't get me wrong it has no comic bubbles or panels and is a chapter book. It is also decidedly British and hasn't been Americanized; in fact, at the end of the book "Tom" has created a visual and funny glossary which defines a lot of the British-isms for the reader. I haven't read the first book and it didn't hamper my understanding of this one at all but I think I may have had an extra fondness for the characters if I had. Extremely humorous in the British humour way but with no real plot, just the average (well, not-so-average) day-to-day doings of a middle school boy, his friend, annoying older sister and the class bully. Fun read will appeal to reluctant readers and those who like to draw.

Splatter Punk meets Manga

Magical Girl Apocalypse is gory, nasty, goofy and moves at a break neck pace. The set up is brief, and within the first few pages blood is being spilled, flesh is being ripped and creepy girls are screaming "magical". Oh, and there are zombies. Magical girl zombies who are strong enough to smash someone's head with one fist.

First off, this book is gory. No, not just violent. Gory. Characters are not just killed, but ripped to shreds, and it is all drawn in dripping, stomach churning detail. Anyone and everyone can, and most likely will, die in horrific and brutal ways. This is both a strength of this book, and a weakness. It's a strength in that the stakes are sky high, and the reader is never made to feel comfortable. It weakens the book in the fact, that outside of the two main characters, the reader is not given a group of characters to connect with. While the group starts to solidify a bit towards the end, it is hard to become invested in any one particular character when you realize how disposable they are. Still, if a character annoys you (and there are a few that have major potential) just rest easy knowing that in a page or two they will probably be burned alive, or be sliced in half. So... yay!

This volume is almost all set up. It is establishing the threat, and the many creepy cute forms it can take. Once the attack starts (and that is within the first five or ten pages), the pace never slows. There are a few quick glimpses as to what is causing the attack, and maybe a vague hint or two as to who or what may be behind the sudden appearance of the magical girls, but the actually plot is very limited, as most of the page count is spent on characters fleeing, and more often than not, dying violently. There is some humor to be found in these pages, and with the over the top nature of the whole story, it fits well.

The magical girls themselves are very creepy, with a wide eyed, doll like appearance that is in sharp contrast to the more typical manga looking main characters. Their clothes, weapons, and lifeless faces are wonderfully designed, and show real skill and creativity. The human characters are varied looking, with detailed expressions, although there are some issues when it comes to the female characters, with some one of the more well endowed characters chests not only defying physics, but also basic anatomy. Still, each character has a distinct look and feel, and in a cast this large, that is key to helping the reader keep the who's who straight. The gore, as I said, is drawn in detail. Heads are ripped open or blown off, holes are blown through bodies, people are impaled, ripped in half... you get the idea. Obviously, this book is not for the weak stomached or the sensitive.

If you are looking for a true splatter manga, then Magical Girl Apocalypse is perfect for you. If you are looking for actual magic girls, though, look elsewhere.

Unexpectedly, the worst of all possible apocalypses

Wow. Just... wow. I find myself at a bit of a loss as to how to describe this book, which is better than it has a right to be given the totally gonzo premise. If you thought "Madoka Magica" gave the magical girl genre a scary twist, you haven't seen anything yet.

So, a bit of minor first-chapter plot stuff first... [MINOR SPOILERS, BUT NO MORE THAN IS ON THE JACKET COPY] Teenager Kii is having a run-of-the-mill day at high school when a freaky little girl in a gothic Lolita outfit (pictured on the front cover) blasts through his classroom window while he's in the bathroom. He returns to a bloodbath, arriving just in time to see the last of his friends killed by this menace. He manages to temporarily defeat her and discovers that at least one classmate did survive -- Tsukune, a painfully shy girl who was once a good friend of his and who has lately been the victim of bullying. But then the magical girl revives, and his dead classmates start to rise... wearing frilly dresses. [END MINOR SPOILER]

MGA wins points in several areas. The artwork, while sometimes gory and gruesome to the point of repulsive, is excellent and appropriate for the story it's telling. Also, don't worry that the whole thing looks like "Sailor Moon, Directed by Tim Burton" -- only the magical girls look like that, and the setting and other characters are drawn in a more normal style. Also, the suspense factor is through the roof with this story. Imagine if a zombie event on the level of "Dawn of the Dead" occurred, only the zombie hordes were being led by intelligent beings with superhero-level powers and insatiable bloodlust. Not since "Marvel Zombies" have I seen an apocalypse I'd be more desperate to avoid, and the very idea that a normal person could survive this for the duration seems unthinkable. I read the whole book in one sitting.

On the negative side, MGA only wins originality points for its combination, not its execution. The similarities to "High School of the Dead" (very much) and "Madoka Magica" (somewhat) are strong enough that this hellscape feels like retread ground in a lot of ways. The plot so far has also been minimal -- the action is happening too fast for anything beyond individual character development to occur, and the apocalypse comes unexplained. (I think I may have already figured it out based on the "Chekov's Gun" principle, but time will tell on that.) And finally, the gore might be too much for even some hardened horror-hounds. There are some seriously twisted deaths in this thing.

Overall, I would rate "Magical Girl Apocalypse" about 3.5 stars, but I'll give it the benefit of a doubt and bump it up to 4. It did keep me on the edge of my seat, and I will be coming back to see what happens.

Too dang good.

This Manga is really good. I tell anybody to read this manga and continue to read it. The first volume might turn people off in the slightest, but the awesome story gets better and better through each chapter and volume. I encourage anybody to read this Manga. This is really gory as hell and the idea of zombie like magical girl's is awesome.
