If you are only going to own one mineralogy book, this needs to be it. A scholarly but well grounded text that refrains from the turf of PhD dissertations and instead expertly handles the critical material. As he has shown time and time again, Sinkankas knew his stuff and was a master at writing about it.

Mineralogy for Amateurs

Every book that I pick up on rockhounding and mineralogy has references to works by Mr. John Sinkankas, a retired Navy Captain who had a passion for mineralogy and for passing his passion on to others.

I was very fortunate to find a copy of this book for sale on Amazon, as the book is out of print. The book is a treasure trove of information on all aspects of mineralogy, including how crystals are formed, crystal systems, physical and optical properties of minerals, and even how to make your own tools for mineral identification.

The book is highly readable, and Mr. Sinkankas has a way of presenting technical information that is accurate and usable to the amateur as well as the seasoned mineralogist. I consider this one of the best books that I have in my library, and I would highly recommend this one and anything written by Mr. Sinkankas.

Arranged in the relatively distinct yet interweaving parts of ’Historical Perspectives’, ’Recent and Contemporary Production’ and ’Cultural Explorations’, its various chapters act to juxtapose the socio-historical distinctions between the major style categories most typically associated with music in Ireland - traditional, classical and popular - and to explore a range of dialectical relationships between these musical styles in matters pertaining to national and cultural identity. The book includes a number of chapters that examine various movements (and ’moments’) of traditional music revival from the late eighteenth century to the present day, as well as chapters that tease out various issues of national identity pertaining to individual composers/performers (art music, popular music) and their audiences. Many chapters in the volume consider mediating influences (infrastructural, technological, political) and/or social categories (class, gender, religion, ethnicity, race, age) in the interpretation of music production and consumption. John O'Flynn is Senior Lecturer and Head of Music at St Patrick's College, Dublin City University. He is author of The Irishness of Irish Music (Ashgate, 2009) and has penned numerous book chapters, articles and encyclopaedia entries on a diverse range of topics in the fields of musicology, music education and music sociology. Mark Fitzgerald lectures at Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama. His research interests and publications include work on contemporary Irish composers such as Gerald Barry and Raymond Deane as well as twentieth-century composers such as Berg and Busoni.

About the Author
Kathryn MacCluskie is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education at Cleveland State University.� She completed her undergraduate work and Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.� Following several years working with youth in residential treatment, she earned an Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology from West Virginia University.� Dr. MacCluskie served as the Drug and Alcohol Program Coordinator at Morgantown Federal Correctional Institution, and then worked as a therapist in a community mental health center.� She joined the faculty at Cleveland State in 1994, and in addition to leading the Counselor Education section, also served as Chair of the Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects.� Her professional interests lie in counseling student growth and development, and the interface between mental health and global sustainability.�

Good Book but no CD ROM

The book is loaded with valuable counseling information and organized in a useful manner although there was no CD ROM. There are many references to supplemental materials and videos that I am sure would improve the vast knowledge base of the counseling styles and theories we are suppose to learn. To see an example of what the book states in print should have been augmented with the ROM. It was not discounted due to not having full packaging.

This book has the best diagrams of wiring situations of any book I've ever seen, and I've seen, and used, a lot of different handyman books! The diagrams are very, very clear. Most of the wiring situations one needs are included, as well. Best wiring book bar none!

I had one several years ago, but I lent it out and never got it back. So I bought another to keep aroound for more complex wiring projects like 3 way switches, and the associated lighting, etc.Great book to pull out and refresh yourself before digging in to a project, if you don't do this for a living. Also has a section on trouble shooting shorts which can be helpful for small projects like an electrical toy, tool, lamps etc.

Needs a technical proofreader!!!

Terrible book.

I found multiple errors during the first reading. Not grammar errors, technical errors. Mixing "./" and ":/" in math operations. Incorrect dimensioning of a matrix in the explanation of the "Dimension" command. Confusing variables 'y' and 'b' in the explanation of the Linspace command. Matrix operations done wrong.

I figure that I know maybe 15% of Matlab and need this book to try and learn the other 85%. There is no way to trust this book for teaching when so many obvious mistakes have been made. Total junk.

I am really happy i bought this book seems to have all the answers that I need when other have failed. It has become my go-to reference book for anything Matlab . It's been a good while since I've used Matlab, and I needed something to quickly bring me back up to speed with the older concepts, as well as some of the newer ones (esp. plotting). This book is a really good purchase for anyone having problems programming with MATLAB.

Of course there are several important topic do not treated in depth, and many other not mentioned at all, but this is not an enciclopedic book. For the basis I think that this book useful and clear.

Don't go to a used car lot without it

Purchased a clean Plymouth Breeze for my son after his HS graduation. Spent a day at the used car lots and having this baby in my hip pocket was invaluable. Some of the asking prices from the used car con artists were a joke. I purchased the Breeze at top of Kelly Blue Book which was actually a good deal. I think low blue book is not a realistic value.

In writing Power-Up, I wanted to take what I had learned about Japanese art and culture and apply it to the video games that I had grown up loving so much, in an attempt to explain why Japan had been so successful throughout the world, from such an early point in gaming history.�
I wrote this book while living in Kyoto, Japan, just a few minutes' walk down the road from the original Nintendo Playing Cards building. It's a snapshot of that year of my life, as well as a history and profile of Japanese games from Super Mario�to Final Fantasy to Ico.�
For the revised 2016 edition available from Dover Publications, I wrote the only thing that seemed appropriate: an all-new chapter paying tribute to the life and work of Nintendo's late president Satoru Iwata.

Too short and too shallow, but basically worthwhile

I enjoyed this book, mostly. Within its scattershot set of chapters about Japanese games in general, there's a fascinating, albeit sketchy, history of Nintendo that contained many small revelations for me, despite that I've been playing video games incessantly since 1987 or so. But the rest of the material was less compelling for me. The chapter about music games and music in games actively frustrated me--it gave only a brief survey of either topic, and seemed to spend most of its words on a tedious, obsessive examination of Final Fantasy albums. A chapter about Akihabara, Japan's premier consumer electronics marketplace, pushed the trivia-to-insight ratio similarly high. In his effort to treat video games as if they deserve the attention of artists, Kohler concentrates too much on material that is only interesting to fans.

Still, on the whole I'm glad I read this book, and I hope Kohler's stated desire to encourage further such works is satisfied; there is clearly much more to say.

Something about Japan by someone who understands Japan

Kohler has done a very, very good job of surveying the Japanese video game industry.
Unlike other writers who have written game histories, Kohler speaks Japanese and lived in Japan. He covered the Japanese video game market for international publications. Frankly, the depth of his understanding shows throughout this book.
Kohler's interviews are direct and insightful. He managed to get access to many of Japan's leading game designers. As somebody who has read many books about the video game industry, I noticed that Kohler's knowledge of the Japanese language resulted in a more direct style of interview.
Kohler managed to get his hands on the creators of such games as ICO, Parapa, and, of course, Mario.
One thing I will say about "Power-Up" is that it is a specialized book. If you are looking for a general survey of gaming, or a picture book with glossy full-color art, this is not the book. This is NOT a book for folks who want to read about the games they played as kids.
"Power-Up" is a highly-specialized book. I believe that it belongs on the top shelf of ANY collector who considers himself/herself a serious student of video games. This is a resource, like Lenny Herman's "Phoenix," that will be appreciated by hardcore gamers for a very long time.
