This book will open your eyes to the benefits of having a break from alcohol.

If you have ever considered having a break from the demon drink or wondered what it may be like this is the book for you. I found myself agreeing with the author on many occasions about how entrenched alcohol has become in our society but the fact that most people accept it as the norm.

As someone who has had a break from the booze for an extended period (10 months) I can honestly say that this book has inspired me to have another break. As David mentions in the book the clarity that you gain not to mention the health benefits are well worth it.

This book is not designed as a how to type book however it provides an insight as to how wonderful and fulfilling life can be once you give your body the opportunity to function without alcohol.

I also really like the idea of the title. "Between Drinks". I think that by adopting this mindset you are much more likely to succeed staying alcohol free than when I gave up last time saying that "I would never drink again". When you tell yourself you can't have something you want it even more.

I wont give too much away but if David can have a break off the bottle for a while considering his career and also his position in society as a proclaimed beer writer I think anyone can do it.

I take my hat off to you David! I give this book the highest rating possible at 5 stars.

To sum up, this book could quite possibly change your life! That is if you are ready for it. There is a whole new world on "the other side" that most people will never ever see.

Quick read and great book if you are considering (or have) stopped or cutting back drinking. I read during beginning of last year's new year resolutions to stop binge drinking. Only on 6 special occasions (Oktoberfest, Las Vegas, holidays...) days did I have more than 2 drinks. I definitely felt more clearheaded and better mentally/physically. Have shared/recommended book to multiple friends who also enjoyed reading it. Life is now more than just drinking at the bar.

Funny, not preachy, and very inspiring

This was not at all what I expected, and much, much better. Downie doesn't draw the line between alcoholic and sober. For him, it's Drinker vs. Clear Thinker, and that's a powerful distinction for people who want to change their habits but spend too much time berating themselves. His tone is completely encouraging and inviting. A quick, insightful, worthwhile read.

Norm Wright's handbook for pre-engaged couples is one of the best ways to help a couple prepare for marriage. I've found that the longer I've been married, the more I appreciate all the different topics these 12-14 chapters cover. I use it for pre-marriage counseling and have found that this book is a great discussion starter.

Good Boy children books

I had to find a book that my son could read that had a boy in it besides a little girl. "Jenny Jones" is the major female book reader now and he wanted to read a book that had a boy in it and this was the title I chose first and it was a winner. He tried to read the entire set in one week and he accomplish his mission. So far he has read the series twice and now I am forced to get the rest.

My six and a half year olds love these books. They are easy to understand and each chapter has enough length to read one a day or several. It is refreshing to read a children's book that does not contain witches, abusive language, or potty jokes. We will be ordering the whole collection.

Jigsaw Jones is a great series for kids to read. The stories are fun and introduce kids to many situations that they would not otherwise have. We have good family discussions after reading some chapters.

A fine collection of poetry, summing up a life

When Ron Padgett was a teenager, according to his biography at the Poetry Foundation, he and some friends founded a poetry review – and he convinced Allen Ginsberg (among others) to submit poems to it. The review lasted for five issues. But still, not bad for a young man from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Padgett has published more than 20 volumes of poetry, translations of French poets (like Apollonaire), essays, and memoirs, and edited or co-edited poetry anthologies. He is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, and was a finalist or a Pulitzer Prize in 2012.

In other words, he is a presence in American poetry. And now he’s assembled selected work from a lifetime of publishing into "Collected Poems." It’s a hefty volume (782 pages of poetry, and then notes and an appendix). It’s also a rewarding volume, a fascinating collection of the poems of youth, maturity, middle age and beyond.

The poems contain no central theme or idea. They are long and short, narratives and stories, haikus and sonnets (of a sort), place poems and relationship poems, short notes and observations and even an occasional meditation. The poems are in turns serious and playful, and one can’t help but see them as a kind of summing up of a life, a road that began with a high school journal and is still stretching forward.

I like this poem, both for its playfulness and its truthfulness:

Around Paris

Everything in Paris is round.
First is the city itself
Intersected by an arc—
Which is a division of a circle—
Which is the Seine.
Then the well-known spokes
Around the Arch of Triumph.
The caf� table tops are round as well
As the coasters (and many of the ash trays)
That sit upon them. Looking up, the cafes themselves
Their names at least, are round.
Over there for instance is La Ronde, La Coupole, Le Dome, La Rotonde
And others.
Only the beautiful Closerie des Lilas escapes our classification
And still remains in Paris.
The lilac, is it round?
People here do a lot of sitting around
As in the Luxembourg Gardens
Where the toy sailboats go round the artificial pond.
They do this.
Last but not least—and how natural!
Are the paintings of Robert Delaunay
Called The Windows
In which Paris is seen
As lots of circles.

Literary and pop cultures figures grace Padgett’s poetry. We find Lee Remick and William Bendix, Elvis Presley and Roy Rogers, Scrooge McDuck, Charlie Chan and Mary Baker Eddy, Proust, Picasso, Monet, and Matisse, and event he Swiss Family Robinson. The poems embrace a life lived and yet, like poetry can do, also separate the poet from that life. To observe a thing is often to distance oneself from it.

And, likely inevitably, a poet’s thoughts turn to poems about poets and poems. And so we find Whitman here, and Christopher Marlowe, too, among a number of others. And we find poems like “Post-Publication Blues:”

My first book of poems
has just been published.
It is over there on the table
Lying there on the table, where it is lying. It has
a beautiful cover and design.
The publishers spent a lot of money
on it and devoted many
man- and woman-hours to it.
The bookstores are ordering copies.
Unfortunately I am a very bad poet and
the book is no good.

Did you catch the ambiguous meaning of “where it is lying” in the fourth line? “Lying is repeated three times, and one wonders if both references to lying are more about prevarication than placement.

Padgett’s "Collected Poems" is a fine collection, the summing up of a life, the life that’s been lived and the work that the life has produced. And it’s good work.

A big book, beautifully printed, full of terrific poems. There is a life's work here, and it's extremely rewarding to follow. A major poet whose work was strong from the start. A book to keep.

Stick With It

Ron Padgett's massive COLLECTED POEMS is quite simply more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I hope that readers who start out feeling as I did that the writing seems too much French-modernist-influenced nonsense will stick with it and before long relax into the great ride of this book -- the work of a poet gifted with play, a sort of genial madness, and ample mischief.

You can open the book to almost any page and find delight. I just opened it to page 390 and was returned to his memorable "The Fortune Cookie Man."

Padgett assumes a reader's literacy, as when he invokes Donne in a poem that begins with "Turn every whichway, three-cornered God, and butter the cobs with your fury."

Critics of William Logan's ilk might say that much of this book is the poetic equivalent of doodling, but I would want to point out that this would simply be a description, not a criticism.

A reader may on occasion have to drop back to childhood in order to be in tune with Padgett, as when in THE GIRAFFE section of "Three Animals" he gives us this:

"The 2 f''s
in giraffe
are like
2 giraffes
running through
the word giraffe.

From the improbably titled "The Unwobbling Jello:"

"I have studied finger painting and general sleuthing, where Mom keeps the kitchen money, but otherwise I spend most of my time in the pool hall, learnin' dirty words."

When Padgett leaves us, a perfect memorial for him on the inside front cover of POETRY magazine would be his "Flower's Escape," which opens with:

"What have we here, a little daisy alongside the footpath, hmm ..."

and closes with:

"... and Nat 'King' Cole is telling me I'm unforgettable, which I appreciate, although I know full well I will be forgotten, unless I stay like this, bent over a flower that has fled my touch."

NB: At 782 pages, the book does contain some thow-aways. What are we supposed to get from this:

IT TURNS OUT

I haven't turned out
to be the person
I hoped I would,
but that's just
too damned bad.

That's given a full page to itself, and it's hard to view it as anything other than a waste. We could use a shorter volume of Padgett's discriminatingly selected work.

A great resource

This is a sturdy map that may be too big to pack, but I've got it on the bedroom wall and am very pleased and excited because I'm going on a cruise around Japan. I often check the route of the ship and think about the excursions offered in the port cities.The reverse of the map has Hokkaido, but I only need to see Tokyo to Kyushu and Okinawa.

About the Author
Paul Coker was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1977 and describes himself as an expert patient, he is a well know supporter of a number of diabetes charities and a public speaker. Paul has featured in BBC TV programmes about living with diabetes and as public speaker is passionate about diabetes education. Living with diabetes is about all of the things that you can do and for Paul this has included walking barefoot on burning coals, running half marathons and making history as part of the largest ever team of people with type 1 diabetes to summit Kilimanjaro. Paul lives with his wife Denise and their 2 daughters and he is currently planning his next challenge.

Impassioned and inspiring account of how to live life to the full in spite of Type 1 Diabetes

I don't have diabetes myself, but have been living with it in my family for many years, as both my husband and our own child have T1D, so my own life is profoundly affected by the disease every single day. I first met Paul Coker via our regional JDRF group and have been impressed by all the work he does to boost awareness of T1D, to raise funds for diabetes charities, and to help others with diabetes live their lives to the full, in spite of their condition, so I was very interested to hear about his new book.

In it, he records and expands upon his own long journey with diabetes, candidly sharing the ups and downs and helping others to benefit from what he has learned along the way. One of the many great things about this book is that he admits to his own occasional failures. This is very empowering to the reader, because it lets them off the hook for their own inevitable crises or errors of judgement in managing their diabetes, while also encouraging them to get back on the wagon, rather than going into a downward spiral of despair.

The reader cannot fail to be impressed by Paul's zest for life, his determination and his integrity, and this book will inspire and encourage anyone who struggles with managing their own diabetes. I don't expect everyone to agree with everything he says - I didn't (e.g. his views on diet), and obviously all readers shouldn't change their management techniques and practices without consulting their own medical support team - but it's still worth reading all that he has to say, and then drawing your own conclusions as to what to take away from his book, and there is plenty in here that is very helpful indeed.

One of the best take-aways for me was his recommended stance for meeting your medical team - that you should act like you are chairman of the board, and the medics are your staff, working for you - that's hugely empowering and positive attitude. Too often, clinic appointments can make you feel like you're up in front of the headmaster, on the defensive, but Paul's approach has transformed the way I view them now.

Another feature that I particularly appreciated was, at the back of the book, essays by some of his family members on how his diabetes has affected them. I've heard many families talk about the impact of one child's diabetes on their siblings, and his brother's account is especially powerful and moving. I'll be recommending this section in particular to friends who have issues with siblings' anxieties.

All in all, an interesting, stimulating, positive book, written with conviction and integrity, that is a welcome addition to my growing library of diabetes-related books.
