Bennedetto Archtop Guitar

This book is not enough for a novice to just run off to the shop and start building. The book is outdated as far as a few tools go, but if it were to have a 2nd Edition published, these and many other issues could be taken care of. This book will be a great supplement to any guitar builder's arsenal, as long as you make sure to purchase other books to go with it. You MUST read completely through the book and keep a note pad with you. There are a few places he says, you should have done this or that back there when that was discussed. Unless you have a fully furnished shop, you should start with an electric guitar until you have the funds to buy more tools. I kept a list of the tools and self-made jigs that were mentioned and came up with roughly 91 items (including seriously expensive tools).
There's a serious number of gaps where he says something about a particular method, but then doesn't explain it.
In the body chapter, there's mention of different body sizes, but no mention on how to change your measurements. He speaks of not using any binding as an option, but then doesn't describe how to finish off the body corners without binding.
In the neck chapter, there's nothing about matching the neck heel to the body back side or capping it off or trimming it or anything.
Some things are mentioned, like how to get the particular fretboard scale that he uses, but no mention of using any other scale length. I would imagine it's due to staying on the subject of this one particular style of guitar.
He mentions body pups, but doesn't talk about putting them into the body, again I'm assuming it's to stick with his design.
About 1/3 of the book is a list of his Serial numbers and professional players that use his guitars. I don't know if it's bragging, advertising, or filling a certain page requirement. I guess I'll read that part some day.
I don't mean to sound so negative. It is a very fast read, but like I said, be sure to follow along with a notebook. I've got a sticky note on almost every page with either a jig note or a missing info question.
All in all, it is worth buying especially if he ever comes out with a 2nd Edition, but make sure it's not your only book purchase. I suggest buying Acoustic Guitar Making: Tools/Templates/Jigs from Brian Forbes.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION!!

Regarding the Kindle edition. Other reviewers mention plans and layout drawings that DO NOT APPEAR in this edition. The text references
(chapter 3) "Make a set of arching templates from the patterns provided... refer to figures 133, 134, and 134 at the rear of the book." THERE ARE NO SUCH FIGURES IN THE KINDLE EDITION. The highest numbered figure is #132.
I am approaching AMAZON for a refund. This is inexcusable.

Great book!

I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. I've built a guitar using it's plans and instructions. It didn't come out perfect but then again it's only my first one. This is a complicated build and takes some skill and practice. If you want to build guitars or learn more about how they're built this is a great book.
If you want to save money on a guitar and think you can do it by building your own then you're crazy. Between the time it takes you to learn the skills you'll need and all the tools you'll need to buy to do the job right you could have just saved up and bought a professional guitar. If you're a wood worker looking for a new challenge or an instrument maker looking for instructions and plans then here's how a master does it.
