About the Author
Ruthanne Hartung lives in Reading, Pennsylvania, and has been creating frakturs for more than thirty years. She is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and has been selected as one of the top 200 traditional American craftsmen by Early American Life magazine.

ONE OF A KIND - Excellent book about Fraktur Techniques for Learning the Craft

I enjoy using this book and have done projects out of this book. If you are not a calligrapher then you might want to buy a book that teaches the hand of Fraktur or German Text also called Gothic and Blackletter. I can suggest "George Bickham's Penmanship Made Easy (Young Clerks Assistant" for training the eyes and studying the forms of the German Text. I recommend "Calligraphy for the Beginner by Tom Gourdie" on page 41 of his version of German Text. I would also suggest you to google German Text or Fraktur and to visit IAMPETH website under Lesson. I look forward to making more projects in this book.
It is sad that the author is no longer with us, this is a special (one of kind) book which I will always be thankful to the author for publishing.

A great first lesson in Fraktur

This book is a wonderful beginners guide to painting Fraktur in the Pennsylvania German style. It does give a brief lesson on how to write one, easy to master, easy to read, script that is appropriate to the genre. To be fair, the subject of calligraphy and the instruction of multiple, more advanced scripts, is far too big a subject to be covered here, it is a subject worthy of it's own book.
This book will give you what you need to make a nice gift or art work for your own home. It does a great job of providing inspirational examples and outlines that can be copied or traced, in any combination, to produce your own, unique Fraktur.
Another reviewer complained about the lack of attention to lettering, but the content of his review leads me to believe that his interest lies in European Fraktur and illuminated manuscript, not the traditional folk art of Pennsylvania. This book very clearly covers the American art form called Fraktur, which is similar, but far less ornate than it's European counterpart.

I cannot put this book away! It's one of the best books that I've read on Fraktur. It's very detailed and has a ton of information. I highly recommend for the Fraktur Artist as well as the appreciator of the wonderful art form!!
