Grade 2-5-Originally published in 1942, this title is from the British children's mystery series The Famous Five, written by Enid Blyton. Despite a good dramatic reading by actress Jan Francis, the story is quite dated and contains sex-role and cultural stereotypes that would make even the most politically incorrect cringe. Sensitive, fearful, pouty Anne sticks close to tomboy George (short for Georgina) while the boys, Julian and Dick, take the lead in initiating most of the action in the story, which includes teasing the girls. The only appealing character is George's dog, Timmy, the fifth of the Famous Five, but even he seems to think that girls are silly and boring and sneaks off at night to explore an abandoned railroad yard with the boys. More evidence that this is a relic from bygone days is the hard-to-believe premise that children would be allowed to go off on a practically unsupervised camping trip with a forgetful, eccentric schoolmaster. The whoops and scalpings of a game of "Red Indians" further doom this offering. Skip this anachronism and choose something worthwhile from the growing body of genuine children's literature in audiobook format.

About the Author
Enid Blyton was born in East Dulwich, South London, in 1897. She wrote over six hundred books in her lifetime, including many of the 20th century's most popular children's series. Some of her best-known works include the Famous Five, the Secret Seven, Malory Towers, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Wishing Chair and Noddy. Enid Blyton died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers and is consistently voted a children's favourite in reader polls.

Five Go Off to Camp is a great book but in my imagination I do not like the look of Lewis and Tiger Dan! I have read other Famous Five books and liked this one the best. It was very exciting and very risky but the brave Five never stop their adventure. I did not think there would be any thieves in this adventure but something always pops out in their holidays! Don't stop now Five! You have got plenty more adventures to come! If you're sensitive about cruelty to dogs you may not want to read it.

I found this book very exciting. My favourite character is George, who is never afraid of anything, and Timmy the dog who always comes to the rescue. In this story I found the spook trains very spooky, and enjoyed imagining them racing undergrond! However, I did not like the fact that the adventure seemed so short.
